Ex Cinema Nazionale of Molassana is a redevelopment project financed by the City of Genoa under the Pon Metro program. Its redevelopment is part of a collective urban regeneration of the entire neighborhood of Molassana.
The requalification of this abounded building is as a stepping stone to welcome citizens to regain ownership of the building promoting cultural effects to the entire neighborhood.
The project proposal aims to improve accessibility and public use by a functional transformation and optimization strategy that allows on the one hand to re-install and improve theater’s operations and on the other to contribute to the ongoing process of redevelopment of the city.
The main objective of the project is multi-level redevelopment through a strategy of multiple transformations aimed at restoring a building capable of interacting with the neighborhood, with the whole city and with national and international performing realities.
The proposal is based on the triple system made up of art and culture, community and territory held together by public green spaces.
The heart of the Ex-Cinematograph will remain the “performance” in its various forms of cinema, theater and music representation with the addition of new functions open to the territory such as cafeterias, coworking areas and spaces dedicated to school of performing arts.
The multifunctional strategy makes it possible to broaden the type of user ranging from actors, theater workers, spectators, dance and performance students, professionals, all transversal users in different age groups.
The functional expansion has a double advantage, on the one hand to guarantee high management flexibility which must be able to sustain itself economically and on the other to generate a building that is alive throughout the year and throughout the day.
