Located in the heart of the historic center of Genoa, “SMC apartment” is part of one of the oldest convents in the city incorporated within the medieval church of Santa Maria di Castello.
Overlooking the main cloister and the stretch of water used for ship repairs on one side and the first cloister on the other, the apartment is spread over two levels for a total of approximately 135m2.
The project provides for a new internal organization and usability of the spaces.
The proposed interventions were conceived in relation to the desire to preserve the characteristics of the apartment with the sole purpose of improving its distribution and internal lighting.
The recovery of the old attic becomes an opportunity for new points of view between the two floors thanks to the creation of a glass surface that visually connects the two floors.
The finishes are a combination of the use of historical materials typical of Genoese architecture and contemporary materials.
The original grit floors have been maintained and restored combined with a new microcement flooring.
The use of marble is a further transversal material element in the apartment through new made-to-measure design creations and restoration of the existing one.
